Billing Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

The Billing Specialist is responsible for the billing of healthcare claims and tracking of revenue from patient encounters to the payment of balances.

 

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs daily claims billing and ensures claims meet individual payer claim requirements.
  • Monitors invoice workload daily to ensure invoices are processed in a timely manner.
  • Ensure pertinent information is coded appropriately for consistency and accuracy.
  • Verifies payments posted for underpayments, overpayments, denials, reversals, etc.
  • Reviews and appeals unpaid and denied claims.
  • Communicates with insurance payors and self-pay patients regarding claim payments. 
  • Monitors the aging of the AR and provides collection efforts of delinquent accounts.
  • Answers phone calls and responds to billing inquiries. 
  • Researches and resolves billing disputes and handles more complex issues.
  • Verifies patient insurance coverage and determines next steps for collection.
  • Reports to management any trends and/or issues identified with payers.
  • Opens, sorts, and routes incoming mail, answers correspondence, and prepares outgoing mail.
  • Maintains revenue cycle document filing.
  • Maintains all third-party billing for accounts payable (e.g., lab services).
  • Generates revenue cycle reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management. 


 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education:  
    • Associate Degree preferred
  • Specialized Training/Certifications/Licenses:
    • Certified Professional Coder Certification (CPC) preferred
  • Experience:
    • 5 yrs. Insurance Billing work; or
    • 3 yrs. Insurance Billing work + CPC; or
    • 2 yrs. Insurance Billing work + Associate Degree; or
    • 1  yr.  Insurance Billing work + Associate Degree + CPC; or
    • 0 yrs. Insurance Billing work + Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field.
  • Knowledge: 
    • Basic understanding of ICD, CPT, and HCPC coding preferred
    • Nextgen Practice Management, a plus
    • Fluent in Spanish, a plus.
